Earlier this year, I gave away almost $40,000 to SLT readers, and the most common question I got was about how to save my images. There are quite a few image-editing apps on the market, and I tested them all extensively, from Apple’s Aperture to the “free” (but not really, as you’re only provided with the core software and there’s a long list of add-ons) Adobe Lightroom. The app I would go back to most often for editing, though, was Photoshop. I know that’s a controversial statement. But here’s why:
It truly is what it says on the tin. I can’t experiment with the new image tools. I can’t use the Skin, Lens and other tools to try different imaging effects. I can’t even go beyond the boundaries of what the program can do—and in the instances when I’ve tried I’ve actually ended up fixing it in Lightroom, knowing there’s going to be no way of providing a 50-second video on YouTube with a pixel-warping effect simply because that’s just not how Photoshop works . It is hampered by its own limitations. Although it has a wealth of functions, some of which are unique and powerful, others are simply not possible. The program is an evolved image editor, a device that simply uses your computer’s processing power and drives. And PixelMator could compete with Photoshop just fine.
Although it is a complex program, one that contains more features than a small studio could ever need, it has become a playground for the technically gifted. You can fix almost anything, provided you have experience and can persevere with the program. When I compared the Aperture and the PS releases, I found that it lost more features with the move to a new engine.
The bottom line is that there is no single best Adobe Photoshop for beginners – it all depends on your individual needs and skill level. However, all of the options mentioned above are great choices for those just starting out with this powerful software.
There are many versions of Photoshop, and the one you choose will depend on your needs and budget. If you need a basic photo editor, then the cheaper versions of Photoshop, such as Elements or Lightroom, will be fine.

The current 3D engine is based on the legacy OpenGL technology, and was integrated into the now legacy rendering pipeline in Photoshop. The new 3D engine will now be based on the new VIVANTE graphics APIs, based on Metal and DirectX 12 to provide at least as much GPU acceleration as the legacy 3D engine. New with the addition of these new APIs will be a rewrite of the 3D pipeline, and a migration to the new workflow design, as well as a new user interface of the tools available.
The new 3D engine will be a new rewrite of the 3D assets used in Photoshop and Prepress, making it a separate product from Photoshop and Prepress. There will be 3D editing tools, workflow tools, and a 3D modeling tool. The legacy 3D editor will be refactored, streamlined and made available as an add on through Adobe CC, or as part of a stand-alone product that will be compatible with the legacy APIs. The team expects to release its 3D tool within a year. This acquisition will help Adobe bring much of the design modeling functionality that was missing from its art design software into the photo editing software.
Speaking of replicating the functionality of these products, Adobe is also working with its sister company, Substance, on the integration of its Substance toolset into Photoshop. The introduction of the new product, Substance Producer, will allow for the creation of a hybrid modeling and editing environment. This is done using the new Substance Editor and other workflow and editing tools that will be exposed through the downstream integration with Photoshop. Substance Creator is an in-browser 3D editor for those who want to edit and create with 3D.

While all the new features in the new image and video editing applications from Adobe are quite impressive, and the new file format introduced for XMP-dcop could be a game changer for photographers,I am most excited about the Support for User-Generated Color Space Profiles which enables color corrections easily by simply dragging and dropping the color profile file. This change by Adobe in the way Photoshop handles color profiles is so simple, yet people have been complaining for years that trying to correct red, blue and yellow color is nearly impossible and Photoshop has refused to support color spaces other than sRGB.

The new tabbed user interface provides a desktop-like experience for individual users, while the New feature types, i.e. Brands, Text, Text Effects and Brushes now have their own sections within the Tool Palette. Adobe has also recently announced that it will be making both Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom available for the first time in an API. This will allow designers to extend the functionality of these two powerful programs with new features.
It’s now the 2018 and Adobe has launched Photoshop CC 2018. It is the latest version of the series and it is a part of the Adobe Creative Cloud branding. The Photoshop CC version is a major update, and it comes with a large set of new tools and a lot of updates to the already existing features. The Photoshop family has some other software, consisting of Photoshop lightroom, Photoshop elements, Photoshop fix, Photoshop express, and other software.
